I've see poor clicker training and I've seen useful clicker training but tonight was the first time I've actually tried clicker training with Dirk and I'm so excited - In one session Dirk went from clueless (I heard a click - Wait! Mom is giving me a treat) to standing on a skateboard with all four feet!!
Ok, I confess, I had the skateboard upside down but I have visions of him one day tearing it up at the skateboard park.
Ok... maybe not, Dirk is terrified of fast moving objects like kids on skateboards, still, once he caught on Dirk was jazzed over how little he had to do to get treats.
I couldn't believe how much he enjoyed it and how quickly he learned to try a different behavior when the rules 'changed' slightly - looking at the skateboard doesn't get you a click, now you have to get close to it, now you have to touch it, now you have to put a paw on it, both paws, a back paw, all four paws, YES!!! It was pretty addicting for us both.
I really think this may work well for some of Dirk's reactive behavior - especially when he understands that clicks = food and he gets into the "what do I have to do to get a click?" mode I saw him in.
