Many Poms have some degree of ct which worsens as they age. In addition they might have other ailments which constrict the airways and may worsen at times of sub zero weather- such as allergies, heart problems, thyroid. Our feisty Pom has never collapsed in the bitter weather here- but it is amazing that she has not- we've had windchills of thirty five below zero. We go out with her and we always put her in a sweater and keep the outing brief. If you have any concern that the dog might have an underlying health problem, to reassure yourself call the vet and explain what happened. What does he weigh? (Not the vet, but the Pom? *G*) Is the dog underweight or overweight at all? BTW- do you have nutrical paste on hand? I wonder perhaps if he had low blood sugar. When had he last eaten? One way to keep a tiny more level and able to deal with such extreme temps is to feed the daily ration divided into two or three small meals. Tinys need calories available (from the daily ration) to help them cope - as they lack body mass. Same way a cup of water shall freeze solid more quickly than a gallon of water shall freeze. *G* Also, sometimes, when the dog can't get air, they panic and further constrict their tiny half frozen airways. Have at the ready- a warm towel from the dryer, or a heating pad set on low, luke warm water, nutrical paste, warmed bite of soft food, so forth. And you have my empathy- this continued cold is really brutal on toy dogs. Hope the vet says "all clear" as to underlying health problems. Glad to here the Pommie charmer is back to himself now. Have you checked his teeth? No infection in there draining down the throat? Sinus problems? Eye problems, ears?- all can cause the dog's throat to constrict- and then worsen in arctic weathers - (where is global warming when we need it? Eh?) Phew.
