My Great Pyr - lower energy Mastiff family only gets 3 cups a day - maybe four. She is a easy feed large breed. HOWEVER, I had a friend with a Dane (small Dane) that ate over seven cups a day. Most friends and colleagues with Mastiff family dogs feed somewhere between.
Do not follow the directions on the bag. If I did for my Pyr, she would be massively overweight as would my Shelties. Or, a dog would be starving. My smallest guy eats more than recommended amount for his size.
Mick's Mom already gave you the look and feel guidelines.
I want to ask what are you feeding? Lower quality foods often mean a dog has to be fed more to maintain a good weight.
Also dogs can learn to beg and act hungry in order to get attention. Your dog may be doing this as well.
