I don't own a Mastiff, but can offer some advice based on my experiences as a dog owner. #1- I don't put any faith in what the bags recommend feeding. In my experience, they tell you to feed way too much. It would have taken my Siberian/GSD 3 days to eat the amount that was recommened for a dog his size. And the Lab I have now, he'd be the size of a house (my last Lab was like my Sibe/GSD, he pretty much self regulated). #2- Instead of following the instructions on the bag, I go by how my dog looks and adjust the amounts accordingly. I put my hands over Caleb's ribs with my thumbs on his spine, and feel for his ribs. You should be able to feel the ribs with a little pressure. The ribs can be slightly visible, too. I also look for some tuck up underneath at the end of the rib cage. Maybe this link will help explain what I'm trying to say: http://www.purina.com/dogs/health/AdultBodyCondChart.pdf
As for acting like he's starving, some dogs are like that. No matter how much you feed them, they'll try to convince you it's not enough.
My Caleb is like that. The little Stink Pot eats with such gusto that he moves a 10 inch wide ceramic dish across the carpeted floor. LOL
