Any trainer should allow you to use a harness and if they do not, then I would question them. My feeling is a lead is only to secure dog to human for the most part. However, if leash work is taught well, a harness may not be needed. I teach pups to stand on a loose lead before I even teach walking - if a dog cannot stand on a loose lead he cannot be expected to walk on one.
I use clicker concepts in training but use a cue correct word as opposed to a clicker to cue teh dog correct for various reasons. One, many owners are not dedicated enough or do not want that clicker. Two, some dogs are startled by sharp noises (like a Sheltie I am working with privately) and for these dogs the clicker could be very cruel.
