I usually use a show lead on my pups. I'm not crazy about harnesses, but if that's your preference that's fine. I would avoid any trainer who requires/recommends you use a choke chain or prong collar on your wee one. If I have a puller, the Gentle Leader fits my kids quite well while I teach them better leash manners.

I really like the clicker method with my Malts. They are quite smart and catch on very quickly. Keep it positive. Many Maltese are rather soft and don't take corrections well. Peeps, for example, shuts down if your voice sounds harsh. I make a point to focus on communicating to my dog what I DO WANT, not telling them what they're doing wrong. I'm sure PatB! can give you some great links on the subject. Soda was trained through his CD all with the clicker and mostly without a leash.
A puppy class or intro to clicker class would be a great way to start.
