Ah. I see. I've probably a slightly different perspective as a third gen dog keeper *G*- the ancient term for one who breeds and shows dogs. Our family was always involved in rescue- as just part of the doggie doings situation. Our mill rescue Pom cost us about five grand in repairs. She's so mill damaged in temperament, that I'd not sic her on anybody without mega dog-savvy. However, she's beyond fine now! Healthy and driving our toy poodles to rocketing zoomies around the house. She's their pet. *G* If you've never had a Maltese, imho you are in for a treat. Lovely spaniel temperament- though years ago, they were rather oddly (in dogs what isn't odd? *G*) Maltese Terriers. LOL A friend of the family used to breed and show them. We visited many times- That's why I got to adore them. Bichons huh? Another dandy little bouncer of a dog- and a Poodle cousin. Are you working with Puccini's Small Paws Bichon Rescue? - An old pal from cyberspace. Does good work.
As to "from a puppy" I understand that appeals to a novice to any breed. It's a romantic notion of bonding and delight (me too- even though I know it's often not all that and a bag of chips. *G*) We've had pups- and raised them from scratch. We've fostered seniors, mystery waifs- if it is canine we've probably worked with it- (only slightly hyberbolic. LMBO ) Including, Rotties, Shar Pei, oh heavens- fosters etc. I do have a pack of tiny dogs- (five pounders) IMHO- you might still wish to adopt a mill rescue, or if not and you must have a malt pup- go ahead and get on a good breeder's wait list. We have two really great Toy Poodles from a kennel that does not advertize on the net- nor do e. Took me a year or more to get a snail mail returned- Even though dog savvy and refs etc. Patience. Now we are pals-
However, if we think that by purchasing a puppy from a reputable breeder who does everything right - (you know the list by now - no doubt) it will prevent any problems with dog's health- we are going to be in for a thrill. *G* My all red ten gen Poodle is at the vets right now- for a teeth cleaning - kah-ching. She works in tartar as others might sculpt in stone. And this is with constant brushing and scaling at home. So- there is always something. Just keep in mind- many mill dogs byber dogs- recycled can make wonderful long-lived companions. Including the little exploding disaster we've adopted. You know- you might wish to talk to jmm- further. She's been in Malts for years- and is right smart of dog savvy regarding the how to and where to. *G*
One thing you might wish to try is - going to a dog show, talking to folks there in the fancy. Another is to work with a rescue org- put your info on file with them and should a little something-something come in in neonate form- voila. Why not do both wagging ends of the puppy acquiring methods? That is get on a wait list with a good breeder, and also work with a rescue org? Sooner than later something silky and white shall arrive and ruin your life. LOL Have a nap now- young puppies are a round-the-clock nerve jangling situation. We were determined to get the best tp from the best kennel- nearly seventeen years ago. Right. She's still with us and play-bowing, barking and creating mayhem. I understand you want a pup. I also understand that all toy breeds are somewhat puppy-like (and I do) for their lifetimes. And expensive on the wallet and heart. The v-tech who took my Poodle from me this morning said this of the nine year old dog "Oh what a precious puppy!" Later she'll take a couple hundred dollars, give me scripts, and make a follow up vet appointment. I'm off to print up some fake money in the basement. *G* All Maltese (other toys too) are going to, as the general public says "run you." *G* Take into account the cost of the dog for (gulp) at least fifteen years, not just the price of the pup. (gulp) Usually two large and up- and then up some more. Of our pack, the mill pom - 150 to adopt- and five grand to repair and still running) is about the same. IE- yipes. Ask JMM what is the tally for her Maltese pack. Whoa daddy. *G* OK! Keep looking and then look some more! You sound like you'll be a great Malt shopper. (oh bad pun. I'm so ashamed.) More research and be positive.- Gets exhausting I know!!!
