I know exactly what you mean. My mother has 2 bichons. Her first was a pet store pup (before she knew better) that had come from a mill and second was a show quality dog from a breeder. Most everyone LOVES the puppy mill dog. Unfortunately she was diagnosed at only 4 months of age as already having moderate hip dysplasia and has had to have gold beads implanted up her spine and in her hip sockets. Did you see the guy from Main Line Animal Rescue that has a relationship with some of the puppy millers and will rescue many of those from puppy millers before they are shot to death? He was on Oprah earlier this year. He had a beautiful "before and after" of a Maltese he ended up keeping for himself. Not that it is the looks that count so much but it is amazing to see the transformation. I've been with my mother volunteering transportation, maybe an overnight or 2 for rescued bichons and the follow up stories and photos are incredible. The stories are inspirational but I can not afford 2 dogs (if I were rich, I might have a small pack lol) and I really want to have the opportunity to know my dog from puppy-hood just once--bad enough for me to wait another year if I have to! I know a breeder is not a guarantee of good health but I am hoping to better my odds. I'd like to spend my time & cash spoiling my dog lol rather on trips to Cornell. I know it sounds selfish. There are many who are very lucky with dogs from their local shelters. I have NEVER been lucky. I've suffered much too many losses and I would love to have a long-term companion to dote on. Not to mention that there aren't any very good vets in this area. Between that and dog-food recalls it makes having a dog a very scary thing these days!
