All of your answers will help me very much! To JMM, I didn't intend to sound as though I was attacking Chrisman at all (in fact, I am very seriously considering waiting and saving a bit longer for one of their dogs). My frustration mounted when I had heard such good things about them but when going through the checklist of what to watch for in breeders, the guide said to beware of breeders that charge more for a male than a female. I thought--if you can't trust a breeder such as Chrisman--who could you trust? I knew I was being just a bit TOO guarded and suspicious. This is how my question developed on what TRULY is important so I could narrow it down without ruling them ALL out. This is the place I come to when I get stuck as most of you here are very knowledgable about dogs! This board has taught me what it takes to be a responsible and informed owner. Thank you!
I am very dedicated to getting this right and resisting the temptation to take the easiest route. I have had enough heartache with sick and dying pets. This is the first time I'll have been able to pick one for myself and I am extremely excited but naturally it is a lot of work. Not only am I going through the breeder search, but I am chatting on Maltese sites, reading Maltese books, training books and checking out the best products so I'll be prepared and have plenty of time to just enjoy my new friend once she is here.
I am not even remotely wealthy but I will give every last dime towards the well-being of my pets. I can justify that--as I don't spend money on myself for anything else (this is why I am always home evenings & weekends in sweat pants lol). So purchase price is not the issue. I was (incorrectly) assuming the dog would cost about 1,500--you can get them for that price but not necessarily from a good breeder. So I had saved $1,500 plus another $1,500 for supplies (I need EVERYTHING) and also $3,000 towards any veterinary emergencies. But it looks like I might need an additional $3,000 towards purchase price for a grand total of $9,000. It will take me probably another year. How dissapointing. I thought I'd have a new friend soon. I will use the time to study up and pick the brains of Maltese owners everywhere hehehe. Hopefully my patience will pay off and I will have a healthy pup! I'll keep you updated. Sorry for the long post--I have been sleep deprived lately with all of this and rambling on. Thanks again a bunch!
