Maybe I am wording my question confusingly being that I am so confused lol. I already have the names of a bunch of breeders in 5 states, including 1 that has even won at Westminister. Besides the fact that I can't afford $5,000 for the purchase price of a pet, when following guidelines for locating a good breeder even THIS breeder has been ruled out as well before ever asking a single question of them. So my question is this: where do you sacrifice when making a choice when none of them are perfect? Examples: Does the dog have to have an all-champion pedigree to make a healthy pet? Is it required that a good breeder CURRENTLY show their dogs. Is it necessary that the breeder have a policy to take the dog back should owner not be able to keep it? Health guarantees? And in the case of the "Westminister" breeder (just in case I decide to take out a loan lol)--what about him selling the females for more than the males (a lot of Maltese breeders do and I am not sure why with a spay/neuter contract)?
In a nutshell, I've been given a bunch of info on finding a good breeder and it only served to rule ALL of them out. So I need a better guide in selecting a healthy pet. Maybe just what is MOST important. I know how to spot puppy mills but how do you tell a backyard breeder from a quality breeder with a fancy website with all the right wording? I've heard even backyard breeders may have a dog with a decent pedigree. This is my first time at this--probably my last and I want to get it right. AAARRRGGGHH! This is so frustrating. If you help answer even just a little of this that would be great.
