I like many people am having a difficult time locating a good breeder. I am looking for a maltese puppy and good health is the most important for me. I have been to 2 Maltese chat boards, spoke to people there. I purchased a breeders list and was also able to read feedback from people who have purchased from specific breeders. I take the positive comments with a grain of salt as many are commenting on young puppies and possible health problems have not become apparent. But have ruled out breeders with negative comments posted. I am looking in my state (PA) and the 4 states surrounding it. I have looked for shows in my states but saw nothing for Maltese. I have been to the AKC website and got breeders names there. Only 1 in the 5 states I am looking has a website. This breeder has their dogs on magazine covers, calenders internationally and has won many events including at Westminister. No surprise that the price tag for a pet quality pet is $4,500! Even claims that his dogs don't get tear stains! But reading up on some of the red flags to look for through a link at this site, I even was able to rule them out as they sell their females for much more $$$ than they sell the males. So now I am in a position, as I have ruled out everyone even #1 Maltese 2007 without even yet asking a single question. I must be doing something wrong and am taking a step back, asking your advice (as I have never been steered wrong here), and starting agin from square one. I understand this is the point where many people get frustrated and jump for any dog and although one has been promised to me (not the best breeder I suspect but I will ask you about that later) I do not want to do that. I am hoping my patience will pay off later with a beautiful, healthy dog.
