The advice that the trainer gave today and that you've backed up with your comments and articles already seems to be making a difference. The trainer said to actually give him my hand, put it further back into his mouth, and LET him mouth me, and then yelp when it gets too firm. He seems to be enjoying just being able to finally mouth me (and I enjoy it, too), so I can see how we go to "mouthing by request" and then "no mouthing" from here. This makes more sense than punishing him every single time he goes to put his mouth on us at all.
Do you have any tips for biting CLOTHING? He really likes this as well, and starts pulling at clothes (and already tearing a few things) when he gets really excited. We use the command "OFF!" which he gets, but he's still doing it quite a bit. Do we just stay consistent with this, or is there something else to try?
He has LOTS of chew things on every floor of the house--Booda "bones", kongs, bully sticks, and
nylabones--lots of stuff which he all goes after with great enthsiasm, but still likes our clothes and picking up shoes, etc. I'm guessing this stuff is all normal for his breed and we just continue to use Bitter Apple, etc. and continue to tell him "OFF" and "DROP"? He does seem very smart, and eager to please, and follows commands well. I just want to make sure that we're giving the RIGHT commands at the right time.
Thank you so much--I really appreciate your feedback.
