I am new to the board, and have a 3 1/2 month old mini Goldendoodle male puppy. He has been a wonderful addition to our family, but we're having some issues with some serious nipping, and the advice I'm getting is all over the board. The breeder and our vet said to grab his muzzle firmly and say "NO BITE!". Others have suggested to "yelp" when he bites us, to teach bite inhibition. When I did this, it did seem to work, but then he started mounting me, and someone said that was because he was seeing me more on his "level" and I'd lost some dominance.
We are starting a Puppy class next week, but until then, does anyone have any advice to offer? In every other way, he's a wonderful puppy--eager to please, learning commands very well, and he does extremely well with other people and dogs, which he has a lot of exposure to. I just don't want to make any mistakes here, you know? I have two young children, and they are scared to death when he starts nipping, and even the "looking up with crossed arms" doesn't always work once he gets really excited. His nips draw blood at times.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
