Pain would definitely cause a dog to react negatively. They do not have words to tell us they are in pain and some dogs learn that they have to go to the bite in order to get someone or something to back off.
I would also advise you to try and have someone videotape an incident for replay. I have had clients do this and it is a BIG help - though a good trainer ot behaviorist should be able to walk in and look for signs of tension that could lead to an incident.
Make notes of what happens, do there seem to be any triggers, what the dogs do and how you react. This is also a help.
