Last night I noticed that my boy could not urinate which was a potential risk with his condition but he had been doing really well these last few weeks and I almost had hopes of him making it for one more camping trip. I took him to the emergency clinic and they wanted to put him down because other than a barbaric surgery that would only cause him suffering there were no other options. I wouldn't let them put him down and instead had them straight cath him to remove the urine and took him home for one more night. He still could not pass any urine today and so I had no choice but to take him to his regular vet this morning and have him put to sleep. I lost my other pet last May and although difficult, putting that pet to sleep was relieving him of suffering. With Winston, it was much worse and even the vet admitted it was tough as he was still so very full of life and his quality of life was still very good but he just could not urinate and there were no other humane options. I was expecting to have to do this but I anticipated that his quality of life would be poor or that I would be relieving him of some suffering. Winston fought it and as expected, I am devastated--I have no one to come home to anymore--my life revolved around him but even the idea of another pet makes me shudder as I haven't had much luck with pet health and I can't seem to find a vet I completely trust after the issues I had with my last one. Anyway, for anyone that doesn't know Winston's background, I inherited him from a family member that committed suicide. This person got a "deal" on Winston's purchase price in exchange for a stud service that never occurred because I then got him and
am not up for backyard breeding. Winston was neutered late as a result and developed prostate cancer that might not have occurred had he been neutered at an earlier age. Some "deal"! It not only cost me thousands of dollars but also Winston's life. Please warn those you know that may consider leaving their dogs intact.
