The right-wing parts of the media have been rightly attacking Alexadria Ocasio Cortez's 'Green New Deal' as a plan which would destroy the US economy, but everyone seems to be ignoring the people who would die if the US government actually implemented the plan.
The Midwest just got through a polar vortex in which 22 people died from the extreme cold. Under the 'Green New Deal,' all fossel fuels and nuclear power would be gone, to be replaced with wind and solar energy. Not only are those not reliable or consistent sources, but in the winter solar energy provides just a fraction of the output it provides in the summer, and no output whatsoever at night when it is coldest!
Under the 'Green New Deal,' hundreds of thousands of people at a minimum would be without power for extended periods during times of high demand like the coldest parts of the winter. In the event of another polar vortex in which temperatures remain well below 0 for days on end people will die indoors as well as outdoors from the extreme cold. Yes, indoors there is no windchill and there is insulation, so it won't be as bad as being outdoors. But the absence of power under such extreme conditions will still have deadly effects for the elderly, the very young, and the ill.
Like Mao and Stalin, this is a plan which will sacrifice innocent lives in the name of a 'greater good.' If the US was reduced to just solar and wind power, how many people would have died in the Midwest in the last week of January?
