Should everyday citizens have to get rid of their assualt weapons?

I was just watching a FoxNews video where Tucker Carlson just let a congressman fast talk his way out of answering a question. Tucker asked why shouldn't everyday citizens have assault weapons if the Capital police and security guards that protect Congress have them. The congressman responded that Everyday citizens don't need them. Here's my response to that. If every day citizens don't need them, then neither do the police, law enforcement agencies and armies. After all, if legislation alone will make everybody get rid of their automatic weapons that can shoot off multiple numbers of shots, then it would be overkill for the police to respond with anything more. Problem is, we know the criminals won't be getting rid of their automatic and "assault" weapons. An everyday citizen can't protect himself with a six shooter against an automatic. Neither could the police. So no, you don't need an automatic to hunt with, but you do to protect yourself and your family against bad people.
