Hi - And Kudos to you for being so thoughtful of your Mother. I took care of my mother-in-law and also my Mother for several years - it is such a treasured experience! They have both passed now - and I miss them so much.
I have been making knitted "prep towels" lately that are very easy and so useful. I use the same idea as the diagonal knitted dishcloth - but it is done without all the increases and decreases. I notice that your post was some time back, but if you still need a pattern your Mama might want to try, I will write out the instructions and post it or e-mail it to you.
Again, Kudos to you!!

: Hi, my mama has alzheimers, but still likes to
: knit dishcloths. I need your help in picking
: out some of your patterns that will not only
: be easy to knit, but easy to understand. She
: has always knitted the round ones, but her
: last couple of efforts have been disastrous.
: She is in the early-mid stages of alz and is
: not able to be very active, so she sits in
: her chair, watches her TV shows and tries to
: knit. My sisters and I have always loved her
: dishcloths and I
: know she loves knitting them for us and her
: many
: grandchildren. Keeping her mind and hands
: busy are more important than the cloth
: itself and giving away her finished cloths
: gives her such pleasure.
:
: I know nothing about knitting myself and
: when I looked at several of the patterns on
: your website, it was pretty much greek to
: me. My mama has been knitting for years and
: knows the terms, it's the instructions now
: that get her confused. I suggested just a
: straight knitted square would be nice when I
: took some yarn to her yesterday and she did
: not like that one bit. She
: is very sensative about her illness and does
: not like being treated "like an
: idiot" in her words. She was open to
: the idea of a square dishcloth after a
: little more coaxing, but not to "a
: plain old knitted" square.
:
: It would be great if you have a pattern for
: a super simple round one that was perhaps
: written for Alz or dementia patients, but
: square will be fine. It was very hard for me
: to tell from reading various patterns on
: your website if they would be easy for my
: mama, so your help will be greatly
: appreciated. Thank you so much. Linda
