knitted baby wash clothes

I am wondering if there is a nice soft yarn that would work to knit up some washclothes for a new baby. This mom has been given everything under the sun and I was thinking maybe some nice soft knitted washclothes would be a good gift. But I've never done cloths in anything but cotton yarn and I think that would be too rough for a new baby. Thanks for any help.
