Horseshoe lace dishcloth

Hello-
This site is one of my favorites and I love all of the patterns. I would like to ask a question:
On the horseshoe lace dishcloth on page 1, when it says to slip a stitch, would I slip the stitch knitwise or purlwise?
I am making this as a special gift and would so appreciate any help as I am a beginner knitter.
