Julie's Potholder

Hi! I am working on Julie's potholder. When I caston 52 stitches it is huge. I cast on 36 stitches and the size seems close to the 6" square. Has anyone else had this problem or am I doing something wrong in the pattern? Any help would be appreciated. Stephanie
