Posted by Donna B as far as I can see without actually making the cloth (that I'll do later) the error isn't in the 8 + 2 but in the initial wording: "Cast on 40 stitches or a Multiple of 8 plus 2" The pattern is a multiple of 8 + 2, but then there are 6 stitches in the borders, so you cast on a multiple of 8 + 2 thus: (4 x 8) + 2 = 34 + 6 = 40 So the first line should be something like "Cast on 40 stitches or a multiple of 8 + 2, plus 6 stitches for the borders."
