Cotton is definitely the yarn preferred, but I've actually made some out of chenille...they turned out good. But as a beginner, I would suggest using the cotton. You can get it at Walmart, Michaels, JoAnn's, and all craft shops. Good luck...and happy dishcloth knitting.
