Hi Kathy,
Yarn forward means: to bring yarn over (away from you) then under the right needle then you have a loop around your right needle.
sl means slip the stitch from left to right needle purlwise is with the yarn in front as if you were going to purl the st but don't, just slip the stitch to the right needle and remember to put the yarn back if the next stitch is to be knit.
Hope that helped. Good Luck!
If you go to the knitting about site they have a section with abbreviations and that will show you how to do some of the stitches
: I need some help on the smocked
: discloth.
: the pattern says: Row 5, 7, 9: Knit
: 8, *yarn forward, sl 5 purlwise,
: Knit 3 * Repeat between *'s across
: row and end last repeat Knit 4.
: What does yarn forward, sl 5
: purlwise mean? how do I execute it?
: Thanks!
