I don't check dial B for a couple weeks and you post the article I requested, Robby. It must have seemed rude not to see a reply from me. My apologies. I'm not actually an inconsiderate dipstick, honest!
So a belated thank you for another job well done on a subject dear to my comic reading heart. Looking at all those beautiful scans just reminded me of why I loved Mike's art in the first place. The panel with the Spectre bridging the two Earths... that's a lot of mind-blowing adventure for twelve cents right there.
And the house ad for JLA #10 (Fantastic Fingers of Felix Faust). That was the first JLA I ever bought, when I was all of seven years old. I took one look at that cover and it grabbed me by the throat, slapped me upside the head and said "Buy me, kid. Right now."
I even remember what store it was - Thro Drug, Mankato, MN. Is that sick or what?
JLA immediately became my favorite DC comic and I bought every issue for the next eight years. I recently read a reprint of #10 and it's still a good, exciting story well told. Both Mike Sekowsky and Gardner Fox were at the top of their game at that time. #s 9-13 were probably the single best five issue run in the entire history of the title.
I didn't really care for George Roussos' inks that much. I always liked Sid Greene & Bernard Sachs much better.
It sounds like this topic struck a chord with a lot of other people as well, and I'm happy about that.
So once again, great job and thanks a lot, Robby. I really enjoyed it. Here's hoping that this article keeps Mike Sekowsky's memory alive, just like you did for Ira Schnapp.
