It's starting off with the origin that causes the dullness in many cases. Granted, it's necessary in some stories, like Spider-Man's, but not all. You could just begin with some action, demonstrating what the character can do and what he's all about, and then have a short flashback to an origin. Iron Man is really pretty easy; rich guy with a bad ticker in a metal suit. You don't need 40 minutes and gratuitous torture to explain that.
