Just got back from viewing Iron Man and I thought it was pretty good. Not great mind you, but ok for an action flick.
What I liked:
The updated origin somewhat as it hearkens back to the original.
I thought Robert Downey Jr. made a very good Tony Stark (hey, Tony's not very likeable in the comics and never has been).
The suit looked good, but yes, most of the scenes of it have already been used for the Burger King commercials.
Gwyneth Paltrow is just a doll, so I don't really care what role she had.
There were a lot of little fanboy gimmes throughout from the correct names of Tony's parents-Howard & Maria Stark, Jarvis, SHIELD, Ultimate Nick Fury. (You HAVE to stay until the credits finish...there are forty bazillion names, but the final scene is pretty cool if you wait. Lots of folks bailed and missed it.)
Lee, Kirby, Ditko, and DON HECK got a credit at the end for creating IM.
Stan Lee got a cute cameo scene again!
What I didn't like:
The origin sequence at the beginning was long, very long. And too many armor developmental scenes, which could have been solved with a fade to black after Tony returns from the war and the words "3 months later..." and right into the action.
Rhodey was pretty useless, why was he there at all?
A great deal of the plot was telegraphed way in advance, and you could really see all of the little "twists" coming a mile away (the trophy, the ice).
The villain was not all that great, falling into the bigger evil version of the hero routine. Then a quick, stupid defeat but NOT at the hands of the hero.
There was a lot of violence, and a lot of actual killing, some of it on Iron Man's part. I agree, don't take the kids for this one. Expect to hear some parental group backlash over the toys & happy meals pushing this to kids as it's a teenage & up film for sure.
On the whole, I thought it was a good movie. I'm not an Iron Man fan, and I rarely read the comic. But surprisingly, this is the first superhero movie I was interested in seeing in years. I still haven't seen Superman Returns (and I have the DVD sitting on my shelf more than six months or more now!). Nor have I caught Ghost Rider or Spidey 3... But Iron Man intrigued me somehow. So we went.
I guess the best review is that I paid $17 bucks to go see this with my wife and daughter and didn't feel too ripped off. Caught it at a drive-in so I brought my own popcorn & soda, thereby saving close to $50.00.
P.S.
Bonus family reviews:
Wife liked it except for all my interjections about the comic version (Quote: "Don't ever complain to me about soap operas as these comics are just like them").
My daughter said it was boring & fell asleep.
