Sue, which site have you been using to look for a baptism. You also have to remember that not all parish records are available online. Findmypast holds the most parish records for Devon but coverage is not complete and they have not all been indexed on the site, you can browse many parish registers on the site. If you don't have a subscription then it is free to use in all LDS Centres Worldwide and many Archives and Libraries throughout the World. There are images for over 50 parish registers in Devon FHS Members' Area which are available to Members of the Society only, these are not available elsewhere. |
You might find this site useful as on many of the Parish pages there is a link to an OPC who will do look-ups of records for that parish. It also contains a wealth of information on Devon in general.
If the couple had marriage Banns called in 1800 these would no longer be valid by 1802. When a Richard Collis married in 1802 at Topsham it was by Banns and Richard Collis is given as a labourer, sojourner of the parish, the image of the marriage is available on Findmypast.
If you are looking for records for the Devon Militia then I suggest you search the catalogues of The National Archives which will show you where many records are held and also Devon Archives. You can also try doing name searches on these sites to see if any possible records show for a person.
Devon FHS will do some research for a fee or recommend researchers you can employ - Look at "Unable to visit Devon" on the Tree House page of this site.
Also google Devon Malitia as lots of information available from various sources in the search results returned. It would help your quest if you knew which regiment of the Malitia Richard was in, do the records you hold for his service show this.
