Clutching at straws

Would love to hear suggestions. I have been on FMP but it takes so long to troll through all the records. I just seem to look at all the records I have viewed previously. I am desperately trying to find my Antorns. On the 1841 census there is a William Antorn age 60 born 1781 at Broadhembury and wife Agnes born 1784 in Stokenham also Elizabeth Hall neice born 1833. In 1851 William is a house carpenter. My Antorns lived in St Budeaux quite a way from Broadhembury. William Antorn was a house carpenter and he and his wife Jenny had a daughter Elizabeth Hall Antorn in 1788 so I presume Jenny had family connected to Hall. They also had two sons they called William one of whom died as an infant. Is there anyway a connection between the two families help. Sue

You have carried out some great research!

Have you tried using your local library? Some have Ancestry groups with access to resources not otherwise available unless you pay a fee. Just a thought.

Thanks Shona I do use the library but they don't have groups researching wish they did would love one like Plymouth they are really good. I love linking my families and have had so much help from this board which has helped me to look further into the lives and break some of my brickwalls it has also taught me lots about what to look for. Have you seen the marriage of an Elizabeth Ann Anton (Auton) Hall, marrying James Coles, 26.02.1854. Plymouth Charles? Her father was James Hall and a witness was a William Anton(Auton). If you go forward to 1861 census, Elizabeth was born 1833/34 Broadhembury, so this could be Elizabeth you mentioned. However, the only Auton/Anton that were baptised in Broadhembury circa 1833, were children of John Auton/Anton and Elizabeth May.

Thank you Sally appreciate all the help and thoughts I have been receiving. When I went on FMP I put in all variations of Antorn and went through ones that I thought were possible and looked at original records where they showed. Never looked at the one you found. There are several Antorn variations in Plymouth back in the 1700/1800 but I couldn't find connections. The Elizabeth Hall Antorn spelt Antrim bapt in St Budeaux 1788 I tried every way to find her in the census without success. As far as I found my John and this Elizabeth were the only surviving siblings of William and Jenny. I thought a William had survived too but now not sure. I tried putting in Hall too many nothing looked probable. The William marr to Jenny possibly had a brother John who survived but cant find him. This William and Johns father William married Thomazen Clarke in Bere Ferrers in 1738 so this is the William who I am trying to find a bapt for. I found in 1851 William Auton age 19 a carpenter born in Tamerton a lodger living St Andrew Plymouth. A Mary Ann Antrem bapt 1806 Stoke Damerell F. Charles M. Mary Ann A Robert Charles Anton marr 1857 Plymouth There is a Jane Antram buried St Andrew 1756 and a name Anuis? Antram Aulram? buried 1633 St Andrew. Sorry just goes on and I cant get connections but like Chris said not all records on line and I really need to visit Exeter again but when I get there I don't know where to start. I have been to 3 record offices but came away with loads of names but not much more than I already have. Think I need some lessons on how to search. Thanks again. Sue

The William who married Agnes at South Brent in 1804 was in the North Devon Militia. His baptism in Broadhembury gives the surname of Auton which it could be on the marriage too. The marriage is indexed as Anton although it could be Auton. As both made their mark they wouldn't have known if it was wrong.

Thank you Liz I checked every original record where they had them and there was so many different versions of the name I suppose a vicar often wrote it how it sounded in the broad Devonshire accent If William was in the militia he wouldn't be a carpenter as well would he. Although it said his occupation was house carpenter in 1851.also I looked again at the bapt of the 2 Williams born to William and Jenny in St Bureaux and they both died . Back to the drawing board. The trouble is that there are probably hundreds of Hall families in Devon or neighbouring Counties at this time. The only way I solve problems like this is to research all the siblings and connected families. This mean trawling through parish registers, obtaining certificates if after 1837 to confirm facts. You also have to remember that not all records are available on any site online and usually means visits to Records Offices.
