On 1st February 1814, Jane Smith hoped to marry John Pine at Ottery St Mary. Banns were called on consecutive Sundays, and the details of intended marriage appear in the marriage register, both people described of Ottery St Mary parish. But the entry is not signed and a single line crosses out the particulars. Maybe their entitlement to be married was challenged; or maybe the bride or groom was sick, or maybe the vicar failed to turn up. |
However the marriage did take place, some 12 months later, on 3rd February 1815 by licence at Exeter, St David. In the register John Pine was described as a mariner of Sidmouth and Jane Smith, was said to be of the parish of Exeter, St David. John made his mark. Jane was able to sign her name.
Hope this is clearer!
