National archives has his service record on line, gives his date of birth 3.12.1851, and date he volunteered as 20th June 1867, so he was 16. assuming he did "mans time", which is 9 years after aged 18, could be 27 if he leaves, in 1878,, or he could have signed on again, which would be he could do 22 yrs plus.
The service record would give all the ships and shore bases and details of when he left, or if he died in service. Would recommend you download that, (you have to pay about £5 ) and it would be worth it, as it would help you a lot. might even give next of kin (spouse) if he married.
(my husband still has his record, which has not changed much over the years!)
