If the DOB on the naval record is 'right' (and my maths) then he was 19 when he signed up. If his DOB was 15th Sept 1876 (on his baptism, and a school record on FMP), then he was 18. Would that extra year have made any difference? The TNA website states that if a man was 18, he could sign up for 10 years service (W G's naval record actually states 12).
Perhaps I'll just have to accept it was him.
