The marriage cert is on FMP. He is 30, occupation H M Navy. Father William, labourer.
I can only find one William George Pope in the Navy. Born 5 November 1875. Born Paignton.
On the 1911 census, he is on HMS Suffolk, which ties in with his naval record. Shown as married, born Paignton. Eva is in Devonport working as a housemaid.
I have looked for his birth and baptism, and the closest I can find is WILLIAM GEORGE EDGCOMBE POPE, who according to his baptism in Paignton was born on 15th Sept 1876.Father William Henry and mother Mary Sarah (nee Edgcombe).
Eva dies in 1922 and William George is described as a naval pensioner on her probate record.
I think William remarries in 1925 to Caroline Trump (nee Street) and dies in 1941. He is on the 1939 Register with a date of birth of 15th September 1876 which ties in with his baptism.
I am quite used to finding records where the birth year is out by one or two years but not the day and month. Why give a completely different DOB on his naval record?
So, are all these records for the same man? Is the DOB on the naval record a mistake?
I have looked for other William George's and George William's but not found any who would match. No reports of marriages in the newspapers (Caroline's first husband died in WW1).
Any suggestions welcomed. Thank you.
