On the Allotment for Thomas Purchase it states DD - Discharged Dead and also the Allotment is for the ship he was serving on I therefore think it's probable that he died aboard ship. I need to find when he joined this ship and work backwards for any other he served on.
As Thomas died in February 1813 and Jane Caroline was baptised in Dec 1813 it's very probable that she is the daughter of James Smith.
I have far more interesting and complicated families that would make a wonderful book or drama. My husband's Great Great Grandmother had 3 illegitimate children before her first marriage, 3 children from her first marriage, 2 children between marriages and 4 children from her 2nd marriage. Between all members of her family I have getting on for over 15 illegitimate children. I also have another that had 3 bigamous marriages and 2 affairs. Most of my Plymouth Barbican area families have lots of illegitimate children, numerous marriages, changes of name and complex relationships. In trouble with the law for being drunk, disorderly, fighting etc and this is often the women not the men. All makes for some difficult and interesting research.
