There were basically two officer ranks captain and lieutenant and in the later period midshipmen were introduced. In addition on naval ships was a sailing master. In many cases a lieutenant was in charge of his ship purely because he was experienced but had not as yet been appointed to the rank of captain. From records such as a church marriage register it is difficult to establish whether the lieutenant was a "newby" [later known as amidshipman] to the rank or a more senior one acting as captain but still addressed as lieutenant. I guess in a way any clue on age would suggest if he was just starting or indeed a long server.
