If an event did not take place in the normal parish they resided in then the normal practice is to work out from that parish checking all adjacent parishes in an ever increasing circle. You would do this if you have no other information or not a clue as to where the marriage might have taken place. I find it helpful to have a paper copy of a map showing parishes, you can then mark off those you have checked.
Depending on where someone lived in a Parish it might actually be easier and quicker for them to walk to a Church in an adjacent parish.
There are a few pre 1754 marriage indexes in the Members' Area
It might be worth you checking for a marriage on Findmypast, not all Devon Parishes are covered on the site but it could help you eliminate some and save a lot of trawling through various registers.
If you don't have a subscription to Findmypast then it is free to use in all LDS Centres, many Libraries and Archives all over the World. You could also take out a 14 day free trial if you haven't used the site before but ensure you untick the auto renewal box in your account should you use this option.
