I think you need to differentiate between true apprenticeship indentures which involved the apprenticeship of a young person to a master in order to learn a specific trade, such as carpenter (which would usually involve the payment of a premium to the master) and the parish apprenticeships which were a way of dealing with pauper children. The latter are the indentures which usually survive in parish records and on reading them it's clear that the 'apprentice' was often tied to a menial job such as a farm servant in return for bed and board.
