I am trying to find the "missing link" that I KNOW exists between these three families - looking for help pinning down a marriage!
4 Mar 1812 my direct ancestor Philip Moysey TOMS marries Elizabeth Wilcocks (Nee REED)(b. 1780).
Their son John Moysey TOMS marries Maria WARD (b. circa 1830)on 28 Dec 1858 in Buckland Monachorum.
Until now with so many Reeds and Wards about, I haven't been able to pin their fathers/families down...however:
Tracing the daughter of John & Maria, in the 1881 census she is staying with her uncle and aunt (Jacob MORTHMORE and Louisa (nee WARD). Tracing that Louisa back, in 1841 she is staying with HER uncle, Joseph REED (b. 1787); also there is her sister, Maria Ward (b.c. 1828). I am confident that her father is Joseph May WARD (b. c1782), the husband of Mary SULIVAN.
Now, my logic is that there are only a finite number of possibilities:
1. That the Maria WARD is MY Maria Ward, and that ages are typically a bit off.
2. That Joseph REED married either a WARD or SULIVAN wife who then dies young (he is not listed as married in any of the 1841- censuses; lives with his brother, both being aprtners in a large farm).
3. That another REED sibling of his married a WARD or SULIVAN. Unlikely to be his younger brother Richard (b.1801) as he lives with Joseph and not listed as married.
I KNOW there is a link - it would make eminent sense if my Elizabeth REED was a sister of Joseph, pawning off her son to a niece.
To further emphasise the link, Philip's brother, Nicholas TOMS died at Cubbytown, the residence of the above Joseph REED, who was present at his death and listed on his death certificate!
I wonder if any of you fine folks can pin down the elusive marriage?
I would love it to be as simple as Elizabeth REED being Josephs sister, and my Maria Ward is the listed daughter of Joseph WARD, but without anything a little more concrete I am loath to "go all American" and just start attaching branches willy-nilly because it 'looks' right!
Many thanks and regards to all,
