By the latter part of the 19th century the economic changes in Devon due to the mass products of the industrial revolution being delivered by the railway were enormous. Most local industries could not compete and almost certainly included shoemaking. His master may well have been glad to see him go due to falling trade. In the second half of the century more people left Devon than the population of the county at the turn of the 18th-19th century. Its one of the reason the DFHS is so large.
