Thanks, I have been through all the censuses for UK for 1841, 1851 & 1861. There are hundreds of John McDonald's born c1839-1843 and it's impossible to identify mine without a place of birth or mother's name. With his father being given as a Soldier on his marriage cert he could, as you say, have been born anywhere. It's also possible that he is not shown with his father on any census records. It also seems that Archer is sometimes used as an abbreviation for Archibald which adds even more possible entries on census records into the equation. Far too many to work through a process of elimination especially as I would need a subscription to Scotlands People to do this, McDonald is also a name with a lot of Irish connections so my John might not even come from Scotland.
I have all the information on John's wife.
Yes, TB was very prevalent even up to mid 20th Century and I have many people in my tree who died from it including a Great Uncle of my husband's in the 50's.
I can do nothing further on research for John without finding some documentation in Greenwich Hospital Pension records that gives me a place of birth.
