On the familysearch site by using the name Archer McDonald, I found one in Lanark aged 39 in 1851, Middleward , might be Glasgow, and then put in John McDonald with Middleward, Lanarkshire and found a John aged 9. Cant tell if they are related. If you can get on to the 1851 census for Scotland, Lanarkshire, and find Archer, and see if he has a son John, and also his occupation, and possible spouse, even if only to eliminate.
Had a look on freesites for ancestry and findmy past (todays special offer)but could not find anything. With a father a soldier John could have been born in Scotland, Ireland, India, that's for starters!!
What happened to his widow? did she re-marry? Tb very prevalent at that time, usually struck down good looking, apparently healthy young people.
