My Grandfather stated on his enlistment papers to the Devonshire Regiment in 1881 that he had been apprenticed for 5 years to Mr Ashplant, Shoemaker.
I have always understood that apprenticeships were for 7 years duration during that period. If this is correct then he may have abandoned his apprenticeship to enlist. This would have been a misdemeanour resulting in pursuit by the authorities.
Would anyone be aware of the availability of Apprenticeship Records which might throw some light on this matter.
Any suggestions would be extremely welcome.
