When you go out, just pull your cigarettes out and say 'do you mind if I smoke?'. They may well say 'I didn't know you smoked?' in return, when you tell them you do and explain why. It's often a good idea to say you like smoking and that's why you do it, you find it relaxing, and of course it's a good idea to offer the person you're talking to a cigarette. I went through this when I came back from uni 'as a smoker' to my old school friends and I was surprised at just how many people weren't bothered about me being a smoker, or at the worst just asked me to go outside and smoke if I was at their house. I don't think anyone was rude.
