Dear C: There is a tremendous variation between people on how long it takes to become a true smoker...by that I mean someone who NEEDS a cigarette. With some people, the nicotine in one pack is enough...for others, they can be social smokers for years. I guess I was somewhere in between, but after a long time occasionally sneaking my Mom's cigarettes, by 16 I definitely needed a few a day. I have been a confirmed smoker since my senior year in high school...although I didn't have the nerve to smoke in front of my smoking parents until after my first semester at college, by which time I was up to almost a pack a day. You can't hide that much smoking!
: I'm in my 30s and recently
: bought my first pack. I
: hope I'm not in denial,
: but my "plan"
: is to smoke the one pack
: and not buy more.
:
: I would say that I'm
: going through an
: unusually late phase of
: experimenting with
: smoking -- something
: most people (if they
: experiment at all) seem
: to go through in their
: teens or 20s.

: I wasn't tempted to try
: cigarettes when I was
: younger, but my
: curiosity developed over
: the years.
