1.1 The Cons Of Smoking
Without question, the biggest con of smoking is the
health-related issues. There are many health risks with
smoking. Smoking will help decrease your lung
capacity, put you at a higher risk for asthma, cancers of
the mouth, throat and lungs as well as emphysema. If
you're thinking that you will not be one of these
statistics, think again. Smoking will control you and do
things to your body that wouldn't occur if you didn't
smoke.
Visit, http://www.4woman.gov/quitsmoking/ As it
contains specific information about the dangers we
women face from smoking.
Smoking, especially heavily, can cause serious problems for the smoker and those around
her. I emphasize heavily because as with most things, if taken in moderation, the health risks are
almost trivial. You never hear of a half a pack a day smoker dying of lung cancer or contracting
emphysema do you? In fact, most studies concentrate on those smoking over a pack day, and even
then concentrate on sedentary individuals that do not exercise much. If you do smoke, exercising and
taking care of your diet will almost offset the negative health effects. Of course, as you smoke more
(and most smokers usually increase their intake), it becomes increasingly impossible to do that, but
exercising can only help. At least you'll have the health of a non-smoker who does not exercise.
Another issue regards those around you. The more heavily you smoke, the more smoke will
present in the air around you (only in an enclosed space). This will most definitely have an ill effect
on those around you. It can exacerbate allergies, asthma and any other lung bearing illnesses. It is
something that will have to be taken into consideration.
One final issue is the loss of control. Even if you get past the two major issues above, you
will have to consider that you are giving up some self control (albeit for some benefits, but I'll
discuss these later). You may not want that. You will have to make sure that you have a constant
supply of cigarettes or suffer the consequences of withdrawal. You will have to periodically take time
to supply your body with nicotine, time that you may be already using for other things. Your
priorities will change. You'll have to be ready for that.
There are many reasons why not to smoke. For many, they are personal reasons. Please
weigh all of the issues and do more reading on the health effects of smoking and women. We are
more addicted to cigarettes than men are, so quitting will be harder if you do decide to smoke. If you
do decide to smoke, it may not be a choice for you any more: you'll have to smoke. Are you ready
for that?
I urge you do as much research as possible on the health risks that smoking puts you in and
weigh the personal, perhaps moral sacrifices that you will be taking if you choose to smoke. Its a lot
to think about, but you need to do this before you proceed. Only after you've weighed both sides,
can you make an informed decision.
