I won't say that Dave is the MOST under-rated player in NFL history, but you have to consider that any said about Doug Flutie applies to Dave.
Much has been said about his fumbles and the size of his hands but that goes with the territory when he stands only 5'9" (from what I remember from reading the press in the 1980's) as did Flutie. In addition, when you take that into account as well, normally both the defensive linemen that would be rushing him, and his own offensive linemen that he would have to throw over (and see over), would be taller than that, makes his performance that much more impressive.
Case in point. Now I love Steve Largent and Steve Largent retired owning every single receiving record in the books. The incredible aspect of that is that Steve Largent was so slow that he should never have been given a try-out in professional football. Be that as it may, in his entire career there were basically only two quarterbacks that ever threw a ball to Steve Largent, namely Jim Zorn and Dave Krieg. For a slow-footed receiver to establish so many records, he would have to have a talented quarterback to throw to him, and to have that quarterback unable to see over his offensive line makes for a special talent indeed.
(I must say that I was heart-broken to see Jim Zorn benched in that game against Pittsbutgh that saw Dave's career take off, but I still believe that Dave's career with the Seahawks was fabulous)
I stopped my support for the Seahawks, and still have not forgiven them to this day, for firing Chuck Knox because he wouldn't bench Dave Krieg. This coach knew what talent he had better than did the team's owner and he stood his ground.
With Krieg/Largent/Knox, I loved the Seahawks in the 1980's. I won't have anything to do with them now.
