Throughout the world, native people have eaten cycads or cycad seeds in some form or another. Even in Florida, the natural zamia (called coontie by the Semenoles) was a main staple for food. I know nothing about this tribe, but they must be using the stems of these plants to make a starch rich food, much like the 'sago' eaten in Japan. This is the reason why we call sago palms, sago palms, becuase they were eaten in times of famine by the people in and around Japan.
