So what is actually gone? The apex, or just part of the side or bottom, or what? You say half the trunk is gone. Trunk usually means a pretty good sized stem, like 6 inches to over a foot. If a stem has enough starch mass then it can be saved with or without an apex. My article on never throw away a cycad in my website linked on the header tells how to save even small parts of a stem to become a good plant. Keeping something from eating your plant? Just the obvious, make it so the anaimals that eat the plant can't get to it, however way you want to do that. It is very unusal for a small mammal to eat a large stem. At least you should be happy to know that chances are that animal is dead already because of the toxins in the stem.
