Posted by Mark Scragg on 7/13/2005, 3:43 pm These sound like a problem I have encountered here in NZ. Its name is Sciarid fly and if left untreated they will reach sufficient numbers to attack (in my case) the junction of plant to root on seedlings and eventually cause the death of the plant. A couple of interesting web sites are as follows: Discription of problem and suggested solutions: and this site is for a company that sells biological controls for problems: Hope these are of some help to you. One of the major contributing factors to an infestation of these insects is if you have a lot of fungus etc growing in your poly house or even as in my case on the damp weed mat under the racks the plants are sitting in. Just having a quicl look at the Notice Board and came across two references to a small white insect infestation around seedlings. Also includes a small black fly about 1.5 mm in length.
