Thanks Tom. Your information sounds encouraging. I've already added some sulfate of potassium, so now it's a waiting game until the new leaves come out to see if they are okay.

: Thanks Steve. I've done some more
: research an it appears you pointed
: me in the right direction. I'm
: going to add some sulfate of potash
: and see if it helps.

: It appears your high magnesium
: levels
: are locking up available potassium.
: Yellow spots that later become
: necrotic and turn brown are classic
: potassium deficiency signs in palms.

: Even though Stave has pointed out
: a little imbalance with a couple of
: the chemicals, I really don't think
: any of this is your problem. In 2
: months, it is very rare that any
: deficiency is going to show up on
: old leaves. The Manganese problem
: shows itself on the new leaves that
: are coming out. If the new leaves
: come out nice looking, and then they
: turn brown or bad looking after
: that, it is usually some other
: problem. In your case, it is most
: likely a lack of watering in some
: way, or, the plant was being water
: much more than you are doing in the
: nursery and now it is trying to
: acclimate to whatever you are doing.
: The new leaves will tell the story.
: If you push new leaves that look
: good, then you are probably just
: fine with your chemical situation.
: For something to turn out as bad as
: it did for you the way it did, your
: pH would have to be really bad and
: your soil would have to be some of
: the worst around, and I don't think
: this is the case. If it IS the case,
: the only other answer could be that
: there is something toxic right where
: you planted the plant, which has
: happened to people before, like when
: the painter who worked on the house
: cleaned all his brushes that had oil
: based paint in them, right by the
: hose bib by the house, or something
: like that.
